Pupils from both the Junior and Senior SchoolsÌýenjoyed an excellent day of competition at the national finals of the ECF School Chess Championships in Nottingham, with ÌÇÐÄÊÓÆµ represented by teams inÌýtheÌýUnder 11 and Under 13 categories.ÌýÌý
In the Primary Team Challenge for Under 11s,ÌýÌÇÐÄÊÓÆµ studentsÌýAmeliaÌý(Year 6),ÌýChristianÌý(Year 5),ÌýLouiseÌý(Year 4)Ìýand Rehaan (Year 6) performed incredibly well againstÌýstrong competitionÌýfrom across the country. The teamÌýwere able to outperform their pre-tournament rating and finish an impressiveÌýsixthÌýout of 20 teams. The highlight for our team,Ìýthough,ÌýwasÌýdefeatingÌýWestminster Under School who had beaten Eltham in the qualifying rounds just a few monthsÌýbefore.ÌýÌý
The Junior Team Challenge for Under 13s sawÌýtheÌýSenior SchoolÌýteamÌýof Ayaan (Year 7), Benno (Year 7), Sasha (Year 7)ÌýandÌýYash (Year 8)Ìý– three of whomÌýhad previously been ÌÇÐÄÊÓÆµ chess players –Ìýproduce anÌýexceptionalÌýperformance toÌýtakeÌýan outstandingÌýsecondÌýplaceÌýoverall in the national competition.Ìý
The team were undefeated across five matches, recording three wins and two draws. Going into the final round with everything still to playÌýfor, the squad delivered a commanding victory to secureÌýtheÌýsecond place outright.Ìý
